Jan 9, 2009: Richard Avedon - Portraits of Power at Corcoran Gallery of Art

Richard Avedon, America’s pre-eminent portraitist and fashion photographer, portrayed significant figures of the American political landscape throughout his career. This exhibition brings together Avedon’s work on the subjects of politics and power for the first time. Juxtaposing more than 200 images of government, media, business, and labor officials with photographs of artists, activists, and ordinary citizens caught up in national debates, Richard Avedon: Portraits of Power explores a five-decade photographic inquiry by one of our finest artists.

Jan 9, 2009: Localpalooza at Jaxx Concert Hall

Localpalooza presents Arsenic.
Arsenic is a heavy progressive metal band from Southern Maryland. The band has been playing together for over 10 years, creating a strong bond and unique chemistry consisting of 4 significant elements: The screaming un-tamed guitar sounds of J-Rod, added to the very distinctive melodic bass lines played by Pick, mixed in with intense and dynamic drumming provided by Larry Pickeral; throw in Wayne's dark and aggressive vocals and you have Arsenic. Disclaimer: Various pieces of artwork around our myspace were done by various artists: Ben Jones http://heartliverkidneys.deviantart.com/ He did all of the artwork on the Watch Em' Die CD; he's also done a few other pieces that you see in the audio section. Face sketch from the first demo, was created by Terry Mumau ...any other miscellaneous artwork you see (ie logos, stickers or T-shirt designs) were created by members of Arsenic.

Jan 9, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Les Misérables (pronounced: /le miːzeʁabl(ə); translated variously from French as The Miserable Ones, The Wretched, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims) (1862) is a novel by French author Victor Hugo, and among the best-known novels of the 19th century. It follows the lives and interactions of several French characters over a twenty year period in the early 19th century that starts in the year of Napoleon's final defeat. Principally focusing on the struggles of the protagonist—ex-convict Jean Valjean—who seeks to redeem himself, the novel also examines the impact of Valjean's actions for the sake of social commentary. It examines the nature of good, evil, and the law, in a sweeping story that expounds upon the history of France, architecture of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, law, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables is known to many through its numerous stage and screen adaptations, of which the most famous is the stage musical of the same name, sometimes abbreviated "Les Mis" or "Les Miz" (pronounced /leɪ ˈmɪz/).

This rousing swing band boasts 20 years of jazz performances. Lavay Smith’s sultry voice evokes the classic ’30s and ’40s jazz era, influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Bessie Smith.
Jan 9, 2009: Femi Kuti And The Positive Force at 9:30 Club

Like father, like son. The undisputed inheritor of the genius of Nigerian Afro-beat superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is his 46 year old son, Femi. Femi's version of Afro-beat is the most exciting new sound to emerge from Nigeria for years, borrowing the best elements from his father's powerfully polyrhythmic prototype: a funky, jazzy, heavily percussive sound that took James Brown's beat back to Africa. Femi adds to that winning formula the freshness and exuberance of young Lagos and its taste for the new R&B and dance music of America and Europe.

Jan 10, 2009: Johnny Artis Band at Madam's Organ

Johnny Artis Band -R&B, Rock, Reggae
The Johnny Artis Band is well known in the Mid Atlantic region for their fun loving brand of R&B and Rock & Roll. They have been entertaining audiences with their current lineup for years, showing the professionalism and expertise that only comes from the experience of working together to provide the best entertainment possible. Johnny brings everything together with his engaging stage presence, establishing a comfortable rapport with any audience, and keeping them entertained without exception.

Johnny Artis was born and raised in Caroline County, Virginia. It was here he was first introduced to the sounds of gospel music that rang strong in his family. At the age of 10, he moved to his present home of Alexandria, VA. Johnny worked as a chef who received rave reviews and who excelled in the restaurant business until the age of 28. It was after the death of his mother that he decided to lay down his apron and devote himself to his (and his mother's) first love, performing. He formed a band known as Johnny Tenspot and Loose Change, and it was here that Johnny honed the skills that would serve him as a performer. Over the years, Johnny Tenspot and Loose Change evolved into The Johnny Artis Band, and in the process created a name and reputation for good music and a great show.
Jan 10, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Jan 10, 2009: The Speaks • Farewell Tour! at 9:30 Club

A young, talented, and charismatic five-piece band from the Washington, DC area are dominating the mid-atlantic area music scene and are completely redefining the global image of rock music today. Much like Jimi Hendrix, Living Color, Sevendust and Hootie and the Blowfish (admit it, when you first heard their music, you thought Hootie was a white dude!) have all changed the face of rock -- and Eminem and The Beastie Boys have changed the face of rap -- TheSpeaks are opening people minds and broaden people's horizons with their driving, emotion-filled music in a unique, unprecedented package. In a changing new world where music seems to be erasing any existing racial boundaries, TheSpeaks -- with several members who are American-born, but of Asian heritage -- are poised to further prove that music is, indeed, the one true universal language.

Jan 11, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Patty Larkin’s sensual and introspective, yet vibrant songs have rightfully earned her the title “one of America’s finest modern-day troubadours” (Guitar Player magazine). Larkin has developed her unique sound by blending blues, jazz, and folk genres with classical, Celtic, and Middle Eastern influences into an ever-evolving style that is all her own, which she describes as “folk music meets the Beat Generation meets rock ’n’ roll.

Jan 17, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Jan 17, 2009: Carlene Carter at Wolf Trap

Few people can boast of a more talented musical lineage than Carlene Carter. Her grandmother Maybelle was part of the legendary Carter Family bluegrass group, her father Carl Smith was a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, and her mother June spent a lifetime in music, touring with and eventually marrying country superstar Johnny Cash.

Jan 17, 2009: Adele at Wolf Trap

Meet one of 2008’s most exciting new talents. Even before she’s released a note of music – and at barely 19 – ADELE has already chalked up a Jools Holland appearance, worked with Jim Abiss, Eg White and Mark Ronson, signed to XL Recordings and supported Jack Penate, Raul Midon, Amos Lee and Devendra Banhart. “As soon as I got a microphone in my hand, when I was about 14, I realised I wanted to do this,” she says. “Most people don’t like the way their voice sounds when it’s recorded. I was just so excited by the whole thing that I wasn’t bothered what it sounded like.” A fan of such diverse artists as Jill Scott, Etta James, Billy Bragg, Peggy Lee, Jeff Buckley and The Cure, Adele’s soul-tinged songs of love’s lost and memories made are set to resonate with all who hear them.

Jan 18, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Jan 20, 2009: Les Miserables at Signature Theater

Jan 28, 2009: Killers at Patriot Center

The Killers are an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Formed in 2002, the group consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (percussion, drums).
Part of the post-punk revival movement, The Killers draw influence from music styles of the 1980s and 1990s. The group's debut album, Hot Fuss (2004) brought the band mainstream success. The Killers' second album, Sam's Town, was released in 2006, and the compilation album Sawdust containing B-sides, rarities, and new material, was released in 2007. The band's first two albums have sold in excess of 12 million copies worldwide combined. The band's most recent work is their third album, Day & Age, which has been produced by Stuart Price and is due to be released in late November 2008.
