Divided by the Anacostia River, Southeast is bounded by East Capitol Street to the north, South Capitol Street to the west, and by the state of Maryland to the south and east. This quadrant contains the worst areas of Washington to the south, but north of the river resides the lower half of Capitol Hill with its leafy streets and quaint rowhouses. Eastern Market, a thriving farmers market, has been in continuous operation here since 1873.
